One afternoon, I went into Zara fashion to do a little shopping, thinking I’d find a similar clothing selection to the store at 329 New bury St. I was wrong. Here, just like in Coin and many other Italian stores I visited, the clothes were brighter, the cuts were less conventional and the patterns bordered on ugly. I felt just a little out of your depth in everything I tried on, and didn’t end up buying anything.That’s something that Italians have over Americans when it comes to fashion – confidence. I saw many young women wearing winter boots with miniskirts and men wearing light blue skinny jeans thenItalian fashion isn’t just about day-to-day looks, either. Even on the beach, Italians exude self-belief about their swimwear and their bodies. Of the approximately 100 other women in my section of sand, I was exactly the only woman not wearing a revealing bikini. Even the grandmothers strutted their matter in string bikinis, which was definitely a sight I had to get used to. All men, from teenage boys to the elderly, wore Speedos or bathing suits that looked like boxer-briefs. That’s way beyond fashion-forward.Commes des Garçons founder, Rei Kawakubo started out making costumes in Tokyo, and from that humble foundation she has built a $180 million business empire. Kawakubo opened more than 100 Commes des Garçons (French for “like boys”) stores in Japan in the ‘70s and debuted her first collection in Paris in 1981. Two very different cities, quite far from each other, yet they are similar in the way people dress – especially during the summer months.I grew up in Manila until my high school years, when I attended an international school. In tropical countries like the Philippines, with only two seasons, men and women usually dress very casually.Typically, men sport loose T-shirts with their favorite basketball team’s logo in front, loose denim jeans, their favorite sneakers and a cap.Women, on the other hand, give a lot more thought to how they dress. Women in the Philippines are into short (three inches below the knee) summer dresses that come in both solid colors and floral patterns. Think H&M or Forever 21 mini summer dresses.
